A Kelly is one of Hermès’ two signature handbags — a structured, trapezoidal bag with a single top handle, a front flap closed by two straps and a turn-lock, a padlock and clochette, and usually a detachable shoulder strap. Elegant and more formal than the Birkin, it is named after Hollywood actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly.
Where the Kelly came from
The design dates to the 1930s and was originally called the Sac à dépêches. In the 1950s Grace Kelly was famously photographed using it to shield herself from cameras, and the bag became so associated with her that Hermès officially renamed it the Kelly in 1977. It is older than the Birkin, which followed in 1984.
